A geometric study of light and colour by Italian Futurist Giacomo Balla, featuring a precise grid of triangles that transition from deep tones to luminous whites.
Giacomo Balla, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, produced the Iridescent Interpenetration series during a period of intense experimentation with light and colour. This work represents a departure from the figurative depictions of speed and motion often associated with his contemporaries. Instead, Balla focuses on the physical properties of light as it interacts with surfaces and space.
The composition is constructed from a rigid, repeating grid of triangles that form diamond shapes across the canvas. Balla employs a systematic approach to colour, transitioning from deep, saturated blues and purples on the left to pale, luminous yellows and whites on the right. This gradient creates a sense of shifting illumination, suggesting the way light refracts through a prism or reflects off a crystalline surface. The horizontal lines that bisect the diamond pattern add a structural element, grounding the ethereal quality of the colour transitions.
Balla was deeply interested in the scientific study of optics and the way the human eye perceives light. By breaking down the image into geometric components, he removes the distraction of representational subject matter. This allows the viewer to engage directly with the interplay of hue and value. The work is housed in a frame designed by the artist, which features concave sides that mirror the geometry of the painting itself. This integration of frame and canvas demonstrates Balla's interest in the total environment of the artwork. The precision of the brushwork and the mathematical arrangement of the shapes reflect the artist's desire to capture the essence of light through a disciplined, analytical lens. This piece remains a clear example of the transition toward pure abstraction within the early twentieth-century avant-garde.
