A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, featuring the iris gardens of Horikiri at sunset.
This woodblock print, titled Iris Garden at Horikiri, belongs to the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige in the final years of his career. The composition employs a common technique in ukiyo-e prints, where large, foreground elements frame a distant scene. Here, the tall, slender stalks and deep purple blossoms of the irises dominate the immediate view, drawing the eye upward and across the water.
Beyond the foreground, the print depicts the famous Horikiri iris gardens, a popular destination for residents of Edo. Small figures are visible walking through the fields, providing a sense of scale and human activity within the natural setting. The horizon line is marked by a thin band of trees silhouetted against a sky that transitions from a pale blue at the top to a warm, sunset-hued red near the horizon. This use of colour gradation, known as bokashi, demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige.
The print captures a specific moment in the seasonal calendar of Edo, reflecting the cultural appreciation for the blooming cycles of flowers. The contrast between the sharp, vertical lines of the iris leaves and the horizontal expanse of the garden creates a balanced visual structure. The inclusion of cartouches containing the series title and the specific location adds a graphic element typical of the genre. This work remains a clear example of Hiroshige's ability to combine precise observation of nature with a stylised, decorative approach to composition. It provides a window into the aesthetic priorities of mid-nineteenth-century Japan, where the beauty of the natural world was frequently integrated into the urban experience of the city.
