A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Ishibe station from his celebrated Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido series.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Ishibe, the fifty-second stop on the Tokaido road. The series, published in the 1830s, documents the journey between Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige captures a moment of daily life at a roadside tea house, where travellers pause during their trek. The composition balances the architectural form of the building with the surrounding natural environment. A large, gnarled tree anchors the left side of the frame, while the distant mountains provide a sense of scale and distance.
Figures are shown in various states of motion, some resting under the eaves of the structure and others continuing along the path. The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft washes of colour to define the sky and the ground. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and controlled application of ink. Hiroshige focuses on the atmosphere of the location, conveying the quiet rhythm of travel in the Edo period. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper right corner identifies the location and the series, a standard feature of the genre. This work remains a primary example of the artist's ability to observe and record the specific character of different regions along the Tokaido route. The print is presented here with the clarity and detail expected of museum-grade reproduction, maintaining the integrity of the original woodblock impressions.
