A delicate Victorian colour print depicting the terraced gardens of Isola Bella on Lago Maggiore, based on a painting by George Barnard.
This print depicts the iconic Isola Bella on Lago Maggiore, Italy. It is a fine example of the Baxter process, a method of colour printing patented by George Baxter in 1835. This technique involved using a steel or copper plate for the primary image, which was then overprinted with multiple wood blocks to add colour. The result is a delicate, painterly finish that mimics the appearance of a watercolour original.
The composition is based on a painting by George Barnard, a contemporary artist known for his topographical studies. The scene captures the terraced gardens of the Palazzo Borromeo, which rise from the water in a series of distinct levels. In the foreground, the artist includes a stone structure and tall, slender trees, which frame the view and provide a sense of scale. The distant mountains are rendered with soft, atmospheric washes, typical of the mid-nineteenth-century interest in European travel and the Grand Tour.
Baxter prints were highly popular in the Victorian era, as they allowed the middle classes to own affordable, high-quality reproductions of fine art. This particular work demonstrates the precision of the registration process, where each colour block aligns with the base engraving to create a cohesive image. The palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, greens, and earthy ochres to convey the serene atmosphere of the Italian lake district. The print retains its original caption, which identifies the location and the collaborative nature of the production, noting both the printer and the original painter. It offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the mid-nineteenth century, where such prints served as both decorative objects and educational tools for those interested in geography and art.
