A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei, capturing the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō IV in a dramatic, sword-wielding role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō IV in an onnagata role. The actor is shown in a moment of dramatic tension, gripping the hilt of a sword. The composition is typical of the Katsukawa school, which favoured realistic portrayals of actors rather than the stylised, idealised features seen in earlier ukiyo-e works. Shunei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, became known for his expressive characterisations and his ability to capture the specific physical presence of performers on the stage.
The figure is dressed in a patterned kimono with bold vertical stripes, contrasting with the softer, dotted fabric of the outer garment. The background is minimal, featuring a simple bamboo fence and a suggestion of flowering branches above, which provides a sense of setting without distracting from the central figure. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of salmon, black, and cream, which allows the focus to remain on the posture and the sharp lines of the sword.
Prints of this nature, known as yakusha-e, were produced as souvenirs for theatre-goers. They functioned as a record of a specific performance or a particular actor's interpretation of a character. Shunei's work is noted for its clarity and the directness of the line, which conveys the intensity of the actor's gaze and the weight of the weapon. This print offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the late eighteenth-century Japanese theatre scene, where the actor's identity and the visual impact of their costume were paramount. The work remains a representative example of the technical skill involved in the production of Edo-period woodblock prints, from the initial drawing to the precise carving and printing process.
