Jusepe de Ribera's 'Ixion' depicts the mythological king's eternal torment, showcasing the artist's mastery of tenebrism and dramatic realism. This Baroque painting captures the agony of Ixion bound to a fiery wheel.
Jusepe de Ribera, a leading painter and printmaker of the Spanish Baroque period, was known for his tenebrism and naturalistic style. Born in Spain, he spent most of his career in Italy, where he was influenced by Caravaggio and the Neapolitan school. Ribera's works often depict religious and mythological subjects, characterised by dramatic lighting and realistic portrayals of human figures. 'Ixion' presents a scene from Greek mythology. Ixion, king of the Lapiths, was punished by Zeus for attempting to seduce Hera. His punishment was to be bound to a perpetually spinning, winged, fiery wheel in Tartarus. Ribera captures the torment of Ixion with a stark, theatrical light that illuminates the muscular figure contorted in agony. The dark background heightens the drama, focusing attention on the suffering of the central figure. The realism in the depiction of the body, combined with the dramatic use of light and shadow, creates a powerful and emotive image.
