A fine sixteenth-century engraving by Lucas van Leyden depicting Saint James the Lesser, characterised by precise line work and classical composition.
This engraving by Lucas van Leyden depicts Saint James the Lesser, identifiable by the fuller's club he carries. As a key figure in the Northern Renaissance, van Leyden demonstrated exceptional technical control over the burin, a skill evident in the fine, rhythmic hatching used to model the folds of the saint's heavy drapery. The figure is shown in profile, walking with a deliberate gait, his form defined by precise lines that suggest both weight and movement.
The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the saint against a plain background. A subtle halo, rendered with radiating lines, surrounds his head, providing a quiet spiritual dimension to the work. Van Leyden's signature 'L' is visible on the left, a mark of his status as a master printmaker in the early sixteenth century. The artist was known for his ability to integrate Italianate influences with the traditional Dutch attention to detail, creating figures that possess a distinct physical presence.
This print belongs to a series of the Apostles, a common subject for printmakers of the period who sought to provide devotional imagery for a growing market of collectors and the faithful. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition reflect the artist's mature style, where the focus remains on the human form and the narrative attributes associated with the saint. The work is printed on paper that has aged to a warm, neutral tone, which complements the monochromatic nature of the engraving. It offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the period, where the mastery of line was the primary vehicle for artistic expression. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of printmaking and the development of religious iconography in the Low Countries.
