A classic paper cut-out silhouette by Auguste Edouart, capturing five figures in profile with period-accurate detail and sharp graphic contrast.
Auguste Edouart was a French silhouettist who gained significant recognition during his residence in Britain and Ireland. This work displays his characteristic method of cutting figures from black paper and mounting them against a plain background. Unlike many of his contemporaries who relied on mechanical tracing devices, Edouart produced these likenesses freehand, capturing the specific posture and attire of his subjects with precision.
The composition presents five individuals in profile, a standard arrangement for Edouart's group portraits. The figures are rendered in solid black, which emphasises the outline and the specific fashion of the period, including the voluminous skirts and structured coats of the 1830s. The inclusion of small details, such as the doll held by the child and the books or hats carried by the adults, provides a glimpse into the social habits of the sitters. Edouart often added handwritten inscriptions beneath his figures, identifying the subjects and sometimes the date or location of the sitting, which adds a documentary quality to the artistic output.
This piece reflects the popularity of the silhouette as a portable and affordable form of portraiture before the widespread adoption of photography. Edouart's ability to convey character through simple contours remains a notable aspect of his practice. The stark contrast between the dark paper and the light ground creates a clear, graphic image that retains its visual impact. By focusing on the silhouette, the artist strips away the distractions of colour and texture, forcing the viewer to engage with the shape and form of the subjects. This print offers an authentic look at the social history of the era, preserved through the medium of paper cutting.
