A detailed 1615 engraving by Aegidius Sadeler (II) depicting the winter months of January and February within a bustling urban and rural setting.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler (II), dated 1615, depicts the months of January and February through a complex urban and rural scene. Sadeler, a member of the prominent Flemish family of engravers, worked extensively in Prague under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II. His technical precision is evident in the fine lines used to define the architecture, the distant cityscape, and the varied textures of the foreground figures.
The composition is divided between the activities associated with the winter months and the architectural grandeur of the setting. On the right, figures gather around a fire, reflecting the cold conditions of February. To the left, a procession moves through a square dominated by a tall obelisk, suggesting a blend of classical motifs and contemporary life. The inclusion of zodiac symbols in the upper sky connects the earthly activities to the celestial calendar, a common practice in early modern allegorical prints.
Sadeler demonstrates his mastery of perspective by guiding the eye from the immediate foreground, where cattle and travellers are positioned, toward the sprawling city in the background. The print serves as a record of the artistic interests of the period, which often combined topographical observation with symbolic narrative. The inscription at the base provides formal dedication, typical of the period's print culture, acknowledging the patron Vincentius Muschinger. The work remains a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Flemish printmakers who travelled across Europe to serve royal courts. The balance of light and shadow, achieved through dense cross-hatching, provides a sense of depth and atmosphere to the winter scene.
