A detailed seventeenth-century engraving depicting the winter labours of January, capturing the stark atmosphere of the season through precise line work.

This engraving, titled Januarius, forms part of a series depicting the months of the year. Aegidius Sadeler (II) produced this work during his time in Prague, where he served as court engraver to Emperor Rudolf II. The composition draws upon the tradition of the Labours of the Months, a theme frequently explored in Northern European art to document seasonal activities and the passage of time.

The scene captures the harsh conditions of midwinter. In the foreground, figures are engaged in woodcutting and timber transport, activities essential for survival during the colder months. The trees, stripped of their foliage, create a skeletal canopy that frames the village below. The artist employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to render the textures of rough bark, frozen earth, and the distant, snow-dusted architecture. A small windmill sits atop a hill in the middle distance, while figures on a frozen pond suggest the social aspects of winter life.

Sadeler was a master of the burin, and his technical control is evident in the varied line weights used to establish atmospheric perspective. The background recedes into a soft, hazy distance, contrasting with the sharp, dark lines of the foreground figures and the gnarled trunks. Latin inscriptions at the base provide a poetic commentary on the month, reflecting the humanist interests of the period.
