A semi-abstract oil painting by Marcel Duchamp, 'Japanese Apple Tree' features simplified forms and muted colours in a contemplative composition.
Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) was a French-American painter, sculptor, chess player, and writer whose work is associated with Cubism, Dada, and conceptual art. Duchamp's output was relatively small, but he is credited with influencing the development of Western art after World War I. He challenged conventional thought about artistic processes and art marketing. His readymades, such as 'Fountain' (1917), are among his most famous and controversial works. 'Japanese Apple Tree' presents a semi-abstract composition. The titular tree dominates the upper portion of the canvas, its blossoms rendered in soft pinks and whites. Below, a figure sits in a contemplative pose, its form simplified and somewhat ambiguous. The background features a suggestion of a fence and foliage, executed in muted greens and blues. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation, with a focus on form and colour rather than precise representation.
