A classic woodcut depicting the hero Jason returning with the Golden Fleece, rendered in a distinct Mannerist style.
This woodcut depicts the Greek hero Jason, who holds his sword aloft while carrying the Golden Fleece over his left arm. The composition places the figure in the foreground, positioned against a coastal backdrop where his ship, the Argo, waits in the water. The artist employs a clear, graphic style typical of late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century Italian printmaking. The lines are deliberate, defining the musculature of the hero and the texture of the fleece with precision.
Alessandro Gandini, an Italian artist active around the turn of the seventeenth century, utilised the woodcut medium to translate classical narratives into accessible imagery. The work reflects the influence of Mannerist conventions, seen in the elongated proportions of the figure and the dramatic, staged posture of the protagonist. The background elements, including the ship and the rugged terrain, are rendered with simplified forms that provide context without distracting from the central figure.
The print exhibits a monochromatic palette, relying on the contrast between the ink and the paper tone to create volume. The shading is achieved through parallel hatching and cross-hatching, a technique that allows for the suggestion of form within the limitations of the woodblock process. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of the period, where mythological subjects were frequently reproduced for a wider audience. The print captures a moment of triumph, with Jason appearing as a stoic figure returning from his arduous quest. The inclusion of the ship in the middle ground connects the narrative to the sea, reinforcing the journey motif central to the legend. This print is a representative example of the technical skill required to produce narrative woodcuts during this era, balancing decorative quality with clear storytelling.
