A woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicting Jihei and Koharu, figures from a tragic love story. The print captures a moment of intimacy with delicate lines and subtle colours.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) depicts Jihei of Kamiya and Koharu of Kinokuniya, two figures from a tragic love story popular in Japanese theatre. Utamaro was a leading printmaker and painter in the Ukiyo-e style, known for his portraits of beautiful women (bijin-ga) and actors. His work captures the fleeting pleasures of urban life in the Edo period. The print shows the couple in a moment of quiet intimacy. Koharu, draped in a white cloth, holds a small container, perhaps containing poison. Jihei stands behind her, his face partially obscured by a black hood. The composition is simple, with a focus on the delicate lines and subtle colours that characterise Utamaro's style. The figures are rendered with a sensitivity that conveys their emotional state. The print is a poignant representation of love, loss, and the constraints of society.
