A formal portrait of Joachim Rendorp, a Dutch burgomaster, depicted in an outdoor setting by the painter Tibout Regters.
This portrait by Tibout Regters depicts Joachim Rendorp, a prominent figure in eighteenth-century Dutch society. Rendorp was a brewer and served multiple terms as the burgomaster of Amsterdam. He is shown here in a formal, full-length pose, dressed in the attire of a gentleman of his status. His costume includes a dark coat, a red waistcoat with gold embroidery, and white breeches. The inclusion of a tricorn hat and a sword at his side signals his social standing and civic authority.
The setting is an outdoor park or garden, a common convention in portraiture of this period to suggest the subject's land ownership and connection to the natural world. To his right, a stone plinth supports a decorative urn, adding a classical element to the composition. The background features a soft, atmospheric sky and a distant view of trees and water, rendered with the precise brushwork characteristic of Regters' style. The lighting is balanced, drawing attention to the textures of the fabric and the calm expression of the sitter.
Regters was active in Amsterdam and gained a reputation for his portraits of the city's elite. His work often captures the formal dignity expected by his patrons while maintaining a clear, readable style. This piece provides a view into the life of the Dutch merchant class during the mid-eighteenth century, documenting both the fashion of the era and the public image that a man like Rendorp wished to project. The painting remains a record of the political and social hierarchy in Amsterdam before the end of the Dutch Republic.
