A detailed woodcut from Albrecht Dürer's Life of the Virgin series, depicting the rejection of Joachim's offering at the temple.
This woodcut belongs to the Life of the Virgin series, a collection of twenty prints produced by Albrecht Dürer between 1500 and 1511. The scene depicts a moment from the apocryphal narrative of Joachim, the father of the Virgin Mary, whose sacrifice at the temple is refused by the High Priest due to his childlessness. Dürer employs a sophisticated use of line to define the architectural space, the heavy folds of the garments, and the varied textures of the figures present.
The composition is anchored by the central altar, where the High Priest pushes away the lamb offered by Joachim. Dürer manages the crowd with precision, using cross-hatching to create depth and shadow within the interior of the temple. The arched stone structure above provides a sense of scale, while the hanging curtains introduce a domestic element to the sacred setting. The artist includes his characteristic monogram, the AD tablet, at the base of the altar, confirming his authorship of the block.
Technically, the work demonstrates the mastery of woodcut printing that Dürer brought to the medium. By varying the density of his lines, he achieves a tonal range that mimics the qualities of drawing. The figures are rendered with individualised expressions and postures, contributing to the narrative clarity of the scene. This print remains a primary example of the technical and stylistic advancements in German printmaking during the early sixteenth century. It offers a clear view into the artistic concerns of the period, where biblical and apocryphal stories were translated into accessible visual formats for a wider audience.
