A 1896 lithographic poster by Eugène Grasset, designed to promote Mark Twain's historical novel about Joan of Arc.
This lithographic poster, created by Eugène Grasset in 1896, served as promotional material for the publication of Mark Twain's Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc. Grasset, a figure in the development of the Art Nouveau style, demonstrates his mastery of line and composition within this commercial work. The central figure of Joan of Arc is rendered with a focus on historical detail, wearing plate armour and holding a staff. She is surrounded by soldiers, their forms partially obscured to create a sense of depth and crowded movement.
The composition is framed by bold, red typography that identifies the author and the publisher, Harper & Brothers. Grasset employs a precise, linear technique that reflects his background in architectural training and his interest in medieval aesthetics. The contrast between the monochromatic, detailed illustration and the flat, saturated red text is characteristic of late nineteenth-century poster design. This work captures the romanticised view of the medieval period that was popular during the fin de siècle.
Grasset was instrumental in bridging the gap between fine art and graphic design. His influence extended across Europe and North America, where his work helped define the visual language of the period. By integrating text and image, he created a cohesive design that functioned both as an advertisement and as a piece of graphic art. The print maintains a balance between the narrative elements of the historical subject and the decorative requirements of a poster. The attention to the texture of the armour and the expressions of the figures provides a sense of realism, while the overall layout remains structured and clear. This piece remains a representative example of the commercial graphic arts produced during the height of the Art Nouveau movement.
