A portrait of Johann I, Elector of Saxony, produced by the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder, featuring the sitter in traditional court attire.
This portrait depicts Johann I, Elector of Saxony, a figure of significant political and religious weight during the early sixteenth century. Produced by the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder, the work follows the established court portraiture style of the period. Cranach, who maintained a close relationship with the Saxon electors, created numerous versions of this likeness to disseminate the image of the ruler across the Holy Roman Empire.
The sitter is presented in a three-quarter view against a flat, light blue background. He wears a dark, fur-lined coat over a white shirt, with a black cap completing his attire. The painting is notable for the inclusion of a cartouche in the upper left corner, identifying the subject, and a substantial block of German text in the lower section. This text serves to reinforce the Elector's identity and his role in the religious and political climate of the Reformation era.
The workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder was highly organised, allowing for the production of multiple iterations of such portraits. These works were intended to function as diplomatic gifts or as tokens of loyalty for supporters of the Wettin dynasty. The execution reflects the workshop's focus on clear contours and a balanced, formal composition. The facial features are rendered with a degree of naturalism, capturing the Elector's steady gaze and physical presence. The inclusion of the text panel is a characteristic feature of Cranach's portraiture, integrating the visual representation with the written word to convey the subject's status and convictions. This print offers a clear view of the original panel's texture and the precise brushwork characteristic of the Cranach workshop's output during the 1530s.
