A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef, capturing the scholarly presence of the theologian Johannes Cocceius.
This engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef depicts the theologian Johannes Cocceius. Suyderhoef was a master of the burin, known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of Dutch Golden Age portraiture into the precise, linear medium of engraving. This work is based on a painting by Jan Jansz de Vos, as indicated by the inscription at the base of the print.
Cocceius is presented in a formal, academic manner. He wears the traditional attire of a seventeenth-century Dutch professor, including a dark cassock and a crisp white collar. His expression is one of intellectual focus, with his gaze directed toward the viewer. Suyderhoef employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to render the texture of the fabric and the subtle contours of the subject's face. The background is composed of fine, horizontal lines that create a sense of atmospheric depth without distracting from the primary figure.
As a printmaker, Suyderhoef was highly regarded for his technical precision. His work often involved reproducing the portraits of prominent figures, which were then disseminated to a wider audience. This print captures the gravity and scholarly authority associated with Cocceius, who was a significant figure in the theological debates of the University of Leiden. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition demonstrate the high standards of Dutch printmaking during the mid-seventeenth century. The inscription at the bottom provides essential context, identifying the subject, his role as a professor of theology, and the collaborative nature of the production involving the painter, the engraver, and the publisher, C. Banheijnigh.
