A detailed portrait engraving by Raphael Morghen depicting his mentor, the Italian engraver Giovanni Volpato, in his later years.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts the Italian engraver Giovanni Volpato, often referred to by the Latinised name Johannes Vulpatus. Morghen, a student and son-in-law of Volpato, produced this portrait to honour his mentor. The work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Morghen, who became one of the most celebrated printmakers of his era.
The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, wearing a soft cap and a fur-trimmed coat over a lace cravat. The artist employs a dense system of cross-hatching and stippling to model the facial features and the texture of the garments. The background is rendered with a uniform, dark cross-hatched pattern, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of physical presence. The inscription at the base, 'IOHANNES VULPATUS CAELATOR EXIMIUS ANN. LXVII', identifies the subject as an excellent engraver at the age of sixty-seven.
Morghen was instrumental in the dissemination of classical art through his reproductive prints. His ability to translate the tonal qualities of paintings into the linear language of engraving allowed his work to reach a wide audience across Europe. This specific portrait serves as a record of the professional relationship between two significant figures in the history of Italian printmaking. The composition is restrained, focusing on the character of the sitter rather than decorative elements. The attention to the lace detail and the soft folds of the cap reveals the patience required for such a medium. This print is a clear example of the high standards of craftsmanship maintained by the Roman school of engraving during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
