A sixteenth-century woodcut depicting John III of Portugal on horseback, rendered with hand-applied colour and traditional heraldic elements.
This woodcut, produced by the Flemish printmaker Sylvester van Parijs, depicts John III of Portugal mounted upon a white charger. The composition follows the tradition of equestrian portraiture, a format frequently employed during the sixteenth century to communicate the authority and martial prowess of European monarchs. The subject is shown in profile, dressed in the elaborate fashion of the period, complete with a fur-lined cloak and a feathered cap. A long baton, held in his right hand, signifies his command.
The print features a coat of arms in the upper right corner, which identifies the sitter as the King of Portugal, Arabia, Persia, and India. The inclusion of these titles reflects the expansive maritime reach of the Portuguese Empire during the Age of Discovery. The horse is rendered with a degree of stylisation typical of early woodblock printing, with decorative trappings that echo the ornamentation of the monarch's own attire. The hand-applied colour adds a layer of visual interest, distinguishing the various elements of the scene, from the red hose of the king to the golden details of the horse's harness.
Sylvester van Parijs was active in Antwerp, a centre for the production and distribution of prints during the sixteenth century. Works of this nature were often created to circulate the image of powerful figures across the continent, allowing subjects to recognise their rulers despite the distance. The print is a clear example of the graphic techniques used to disseminate political iconography in the early modern era. The lines are precise and functional, designed to be legible even when printed on paper of varying quality. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual language of power that defined the sixteenth-century European court.
