Description
John o' Groats in Highland Caithness gathers bright harbour boats beneath a turreted hotel and colourful waterfront gables, their reflections bringing warmth to the clear blue water of a summer day.
On the northeastern Caithness coast, the village faces the waters separating mainland Scotland from Orkney. Its name recalls Jan de Groot, a Dutch ferryman who operated a crossing to the islands in the fifteenth century. The harbour remains a familiar coastal landmark near the mainland’s northern edge.
At John o' Groats, red and blue fishing boats lie alongside a pale harbour wall, their hulls repeated in rippled reflections. Behind them, a cream turreted building joins a row of blue, green, grey, yellow and red gables. Bright grass slopes towards the quayside. Broad white clouds leave the sea and distant low coast under clear summer light.
