A formal portrait of American statesman John Sherman, executed by Carl Peter Teigen after the original composition by George Peter Alexander Healy.
This portrait depicts John Sherman, a prominent American statesman who served as a Senator from Ohio and as the United States Secretary of the Treasury. The work is a copy executed by the Norwegian artist Carl Peter Teigen, based on an original composition by the American portraitist George Peter Alexander Healy. Healy was well known for his documentation of political figures during the nineteenth century, and his influence is evident in the formal, dignified presentation of the subject.
Teigen employs a traditional approach to portraiture, focusing on the sitter's character through a restrained palette and controlled lighting. Sherman is shown in a seated position, dressed in formal attire consisting of a dark coat, a light waistcoat, and a cravat. The background is kept dark and indistinct, which directs the viewer's attention to the face and hands of the subject. The brushwork is precise, capturing the texture of the fabric and the subtle modelling of the facial features with care. This style of portraiture was common for official commissions, intended to convey the authority and gravitas expected of high-ranking government officials of the era.
As a copyist, Teigen demonstrates technical proficiency in replicating the composition and tonal balance of Healy's original work. The painting reflects the conventions of late nineteenth-century academic portraiture, where the emphasis is placed on a realistic representation of the individual. The muted colour scheme, dominated by browns, greys, and blacks, contributes to the serious tone of the piece. This print offers an opportunity to examine the methods of academic painters who worked to preserve the likenesses of historical figures through the medium of oil paint, maintaining the visual standards of the period.
