A dramatic depiction of the biblical Jonah emerging from the whale, painted by the Venetian master Tintoretto for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco.
This work by Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, depicts the biblical narrative of Jonah emerging from the belly of the great fish. Originally painted for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice, the composition is designed for a ceiling installation, which accounts for the dramatic foreshortening and the upward orientation of the figures. The scene captures the moment of divine intervention, where Jonah is expelled from the creature, his body contorted in a display of muscular tension and physical exertion.
Tintoretto employs a characteristic Venetian palette, utilising deep shadows and dramatic light to model the figures against a turbulent atmosphere. The whale is rendered with a sense of monstrous scale, its form merging with the dark, swirling waters. Jonah, positioned centrally, reaches out towards a divine presence, his posture reflecting the sudden transition from the depths of the sea to the shore. The artist uses rapid, energetic brushwork to convey the urgency of the event, a technique that defines his later period. The elliptical format of the canvas forces the viewer to engage with the scene from a specific perspective, typical of the decorative programmes commissioned for Venetian confraternities during the sixteenth century.
The painting demonstrates the artist's mastery of anatomy and his ability to manipulate space within a confined, non-rectangular frame. The interplay between the illuminated flesh of Jonah and the dark, cavernous interior of the whale creates a stark visual contrast. This piece remains a primary example of the Mannerist approach to religious narrative, where emotional intensity and dynamic movement take precedence over static, balanced compositions. The work continues to be studied for its innovative use of light and its contribution to the development of Baroque painting techniques in Italy.
