A minimalist woodcut by French sculptor Aristide Maillol, depicting three young goats through bold, reductive lines and high-contrast forms.
Aristide Maillol, primarily recognised for his monumental sculpture, maintained a consistent practice in graphic arts throughout his career. This woodcut, titled Jonge geiten, demonstrates his ability to distil complex organic forms into essential, rhythmic lines. The composition features three goats rendered in a reductive style, where the figures emerge as negative space against a dark, textured background.
Maillol often turned to the pastoral life of his native Banyuls-sur-Mer for inspiration. His approach to animal subjects mirrors his sculptural philosophy: a focus on volume, balance, and the simplification of anatomy. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he allows the viewer to focus on the silhouette and the inherent grace of the animals. The stark contrast between the white outlines of the goats and the dense, ink-heavy ground creates a graphic clarity that is characteristic of his printmaking work.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the primitive and the classical, avoiding the decorative excesses of his contemporaries. The woodcut medium suits his preference for bold, clear forms, as the physical resistance of the wood block necessitates a deliberate and economical use of line. The result is a work that possesses a quiet, grounded presence. It is an example of how Maillol applied his understanding of mass and form to the two-dimensional plane, creating images that feel as solid and permanent as his bronze figures. The work remains a clear representation of his artistic vision, which sought harmony and order through the simplification of natural subjects.
