A refined etching and aquatint by Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, capturing a young woman writing by candlelight in a quiet, atmospheric interior.
Cornelis Ploos van Amstel was a Dutch artist and printmaker known for his technical experiments in reproducing drawings and paintings. This work, Jonge vrouw met een brief, demonstrates his mastery of the tonal printmaking techniques he developed to mimic the appearance of original drawings. The composition depicts a young woman seated at a table, illuminated by the soft, flickering light of a single candle. She is engaged in the act of writing, with a quill and inkwell positioned before her. The scene evokes the quiet domesticity often found in seventeenth-century Dutch genre painting, a period Ploos van Amstel sought to honour through his printmaking practice.
The artist utilised a combination of etching and aquatint to achieve the subtle gradations of light and shadow that define the interior space. The warm, monochromatic palette creates a sense of intimacy, drawing the viewer into the private moment of the subject. The soft focus on the woman's face, contrasted with the darker, atmospheric background, directs attention to her expression and the task at hand. A curtain hangs to the right, adding a sense of depth and framing the scene within a domestic setting. The inclusion of the candle provides a singular light source, casting gentle highlights on the woman's clothing and the writing materials on the table. This print is a characteristic example of the artist's dedication to replicating the texture and mood of historical works, employing sophisticated printmaking methods to bridge the gap between reproductive print and original art. The work remains a study in light, shadow, and the quiet observation of everyday life, reflecting the technical curiosity that defined the career of Ploos van Amstel.
