A 1648 oil painting by Jan Victors depicting the biblical scene of Joseph interpreting the dreams of the butler and baker in prison.
Jan Victors, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this work in 1648. The painting depicts a narrative from the Book of Genesis: Joseph, while imprisoned in Egypt, explains the prophetic dreams of Pharaoh's chief butler and chief baker. Victors employs a sombre, low-key palette characteristic of the period, using light to focus attention on the interaction between the three figures.
Joseph sits on a raised stone step, gesturing with his hands as he speaks. His posture is upright and composed, contrasting with the seated, more anxious demeanour of his companions. The butler and baker are positioned on the floor, surrounded by the physical markers of their incarceration, including heavy iron chains and straw. The setting is a dark, claustrophobic cell, rendered with attention to the texture of stone and metal.
Victors was known for his interest in biblical subjects and genre scenes. His training in the Rembrandt studio is evident in the handling of light and shadow, though his style remains distinct in its clarity and narrative focus. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to guide the viewer through the psychological tension of the scene. The basket in the foreground serves as a subtle reference to the baker's dream, which involved baskets of bread. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to translate complex theological narratives into accessible, human-centred compositions. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left corner, providing a clear reference point for his mid-career output. It remains a representative example of the Dutch Golden Age interest in Old Testament themes, which allowed artists to explore human emotion and moral dilemmas within a familiar, albeit historical, framework.
