A masterful 17th-century ink and wash drawing by Ferdinand Bol, depicting the biblical encounter between Joseph, Jacob, and the Pharaoh.
This drawing by Ferdinand Bol depicts a scene from the Book of Genesis, where Joseph introduces his aged father, Jacob, to the Pharaoh of Egypt. Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, demonstrates a clear mastery of the dramatic chiaroscuro that defined the Dutch Golden Age. The composition is structured around the interaction between the three figures: the kneeling Jacob, the standing Joseph, and the seated Pharaoh.
Bol employs a combination of pen and brown ink with wash to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The lines are fluid and calligraphic, capturing the textures of the heavy robes and the expressive gestures of the figures. The light source, though implied, directs the viewer's focus toward the Pharaoh, who sits in a position of authority, while the humble posture of Jacob provides a counterpoint to the regal setting. The architectural elements in the background, suggested with minimal strokes, provide a sense of place without distracting from the primary narrative.
As a student of Rembrandt, Bol adopted many of his master's techniques, particularly in the use of wash to build volume and shadow. This study reflects the interest in biblical subjects common among artists in 17th-century Amsterdam. The work is executed on paper, showing the immediacy of the artist's hand. The arched top suggests it may have been a preparatory study for a larger painting or a finished work intended for a collector's album. The restraint in the palette, limited to shades of brown and grey, allows the focus to remain entirely on the emotional weight of the encounter between the patriarch and the ruler.
