A satirical watercolour study of Joseph Prud'homme, the quintessential nineteenth-century French bourgeois character created by Henry Bonaventure Monnier.
Henry Bonaventure Monnier created this character study of Joseph Prud'homme in 1868. Prud'homme is a fictional creation of the artist, representing the quintessential French bourgeois of the nineteenth century. The figure is depicted with a rotund physique, wearing a formal frock coat and a high-collared waistcoat. His posture, with one hand tucked into his waistcoat and the other resting on his hip, conveys a sense of self-importance and pomposity. Monnier uses a combination of ink lines and watercolour washes to define the form, focusing on the character's facial features and the heavy drape of his clothing.
Monnier was a prolific illustrator and playwright who used the character of Prud'homme to satirise the social attitudes of the middle class. The figure is often shown in situations that expose his narrow-mindedness, vanity, and adherence to conventional morality. This specific drawing captures the essence of the character, presenting him as a man of substance who is entirely preoccupied with his own status. The artist's technique is direct, relying on expressive lines to capture the personality of his subject rather than aiming for photographic accuracy. The muted colour palette, dominated by greys, blacks, and soft washes, keeps the focus on the figure's silhouette and expression. This work provides a glimpse into the social commentary prevalent in French art during the mid-nineteenth century, where caricature served as a tool for observing the changing social order. The signature and date are visible in the lower left corner, confirming the provenance of this specific study.
