A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicting the biblical story of Joseph and his prophetic dreams.
This engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicts the biblical narrative of Joseph, a figure known for his ability to interpret dreams. The composition follows a common format for Northern Mannerist printmaking, utilising a large central scene framed by smaller circular vignettes. The primary scene shows Joseph standing, gesturing towards a cloud formation that contains the symbolic sheaves of wheat from his dream. He is surrounded by his brothers, whose expressions and postures suggest a mixture of scepticism and resentment. The surrounding vignettes provide additional context, illustrating earlier episodes from the life of Joseph, including his time in the pit and his interactions with his family.
Collaert, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates a high level of technical precision in this work. The lines are fine and controlled, creating a sense of depth through cross-hatching and varied tonal density. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive gestures typical of the period. The inclusion of a Latin inscription at the base provides a moralising commentary on the narrative, a common practice in sixteenth-century print culture. The architectural framing elements, which incorporate decorative scrollwork, reflect the influence of contemporary ornament prints. This piece offers a clear view into the pedagogical and religious function of prints during the late Renaissance, where visual storytelling served to disseminate biblical knowledge to a wider audience. The work is a fine example of the collaborative nature of the Antwerp print industry, where artists, engravers, and publishers worked in close proximity to produce high-quality imagery for collectors and scholars alike.
