A fine Renaissance engraving by Jacopo de' Barbari, depicting the biblical heroine Judith with the head of Holofernes, rendered in precise, delicate line work.
This engraving by Jacopo de' Barbari depicts the biblical figure of Judith, who is shown standing in a calm, contemplative posture. She holds the severed head of the Assyrian general Holofernes by the hair, while her left hand rests upon the hilt of a long sword. The composition is marked by the artist's characteristic use of fine, parallel hatching to define the folds of Judith's drapery and the subtle contours of her form.
De' Barbari was an Italian artist who spent significant time in Germany, and his work reflects a synthesis of Northern European precision and Italian Renaissance humanism. The figure of Judith is rendered with a sense of quiet dignity rather than overt violence. Her expression is detached, and her gaze is directed slightly away from the viewer. The drapery falls in long, vertical lines that elongate the figure, creating a sense of grace and poise.
In the lower right corner, the artist includes his signature mark, the caduceus, which is the staff of Mercury. This symbol appears on many of his prints and serves as a clear identifier of his authorship. The background is left largely blank, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the figure and the narrative elements she carries. The engraving demonstrates the technical skill required to produce tonal variations through line work alone, a hallmark of the period's printmaking traditions. This piece offers a clear example of how Renaissance artists approached classical and biblical themes with a focus on anatomical proportion and balanced composition.
