A detailed Renaissance engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the biblical heroine Judith carrying the head of Holofernes from his tent.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts the biblical narrative of Judith, who has just decapitated the Assyrian general Holofernes. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. On the left, the interior of the tent reveals the headless body of Holofernes, rendered with anatomical precision. On the right, Judith and her maidservant carry the severed head away from the scene, moving with a sense of urgency. The figures are modelled with the sculptural weight characteristic of the period, reflecting the influence of Michelangelo, whose work Bonasone frequently reproduced in print form.
Bonasone, an Italian painter and engraver active in Bologna and Rome, was known for his technical skill in translating complex painterly compositions into the linear medium of engraving. This work demonstrates his ability to manage light and shadow through varied hatching techniques, creating volume in the drapery and depth within the architectural setting. The inclusion of text at the bottom of the print provides a narrative summary of the event, a common feature in sixteenth-century reproductive prints intended for a learned audience. The background includes a shield and a landscape element, which balance the foreground figures and provide context to the military setting of the story. The print captures the tension of the moment, focusing on the physical act of departure rather than the violence of the preceding deed. Through his precise line work, Bonasone conveys the gravity of the subject matter while maintaining the formal clarity expected of Italian Renaissance printmaking.
