The composition follows the tradition of the Labours of the Months, a theme common in medieval and Renaissance art. The scene is divided into two distinct temporal zones. On the left, representing July, figures rest under the shade of a large tree, enjoying a meal amidst the harvest season. The sun is positioned high, and the astrological sign of Leo appears in the sky. On the right, representing August, the focus shifts to the active labour of the harvest, with figures reaping grain in the fields under the sign of Virgo. In the distance, a fortified town sits atop a craggy hill, providing a sense of scale and depth to the rural setting.

Sadeler demonstrates a command of atmospheric perspective, using lighter lines to suggest the distance of the hills and the town. The figures are rendered with a focus on their daily tasks, reflecting the social structure of the period. The work is based on a design by Paul Bril, a Flemish painter known for his contributions to the development of the genre. The collaboration between Bril and Sadeler resulted in a print that captures both the physical reality of agricultural life and the symbolic representation of the calendar year.
