A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting a mythological scene of Juno petitioning Jupiter, framed by elaborate grotesque ornamentation.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts a scene from classical mythology where Juno petitions Jupiter for his intervention on behalf of the Greeks. Bonasone, a skilled printmaker active in Bologna during the sixteenth century, was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate complex narratives into the medium of engraving. The composition is structured within an elaborate, decorative frame featuring grotesque elements, masks, and putti, which reflects the Mannerist interest in ornamental borders.
In the central panel, Jupiter sits upon a cloud, accompanied by his eagle, while Juno kneels before him in a gesture of supplication. The figures are rendered with the anatomical clarity typical of the period, demonstrating the influence of contemporary Roman masters. Below the central scene, an inscription provides context for the narrative, linking the visual representation to literary sources. The surrounding frame serves to contain the action, creating a clear distinction between the mythological event and the decorative periphery.
Bonasone often worked after designs by other artists, yet his own hand is evident in the fine hatching and the controlled line work that defines the forms. The print exhibits a balance between the narrative focus of the central figures and the stylized, repetitive nature of the frame. This work is part of a larger series of mythological subjects, reflecting the period's fascination with classical themes and the dissemination of such imagery through print culture. The clarity of the engraving allows for a detailed examination of the figures and the surrounding ornamentation, providing insight into the aesthetic priorities of the Italian Renaissance print market.
