A bold, abstract composition by Romanian artist Romul Nutiu, featuring a dynamic interplay of saturated colours and textured, organic forms.
Romul Nutiu was a significant figure in Romanian post-war art, known for his exploration of gestural abstraction and non-figurative forms. Jurnal VIII belongs to a series of works that function as visual diaries, capturing the artist's internal state through a combination of bold colour and tactile surface manipulation. The composition is defined by a chaotic interplay of organic shapes and rigid, linear elements that suggest a mechanical or structural undercurrent beneath the fluid paint application.
The canvas is dominated by a high-chroma palette, where saturated oranges and reds create a sense of urgency and heat. Nutiu employs a variety of textures, ranging from smooth, flat areas of colour to thick, impasto-like sections that give the work a physical presence. A dark, vertical, column-like form on the left side acts as a visual anchor, contrasting with the more fragmented and dispersed shapes that occupy the centre of the frame. These forms appear to float within a space that lacks traditional perspective, forcing the viewer to engage with the painting as a flat, immediate experience.
Nutiu's approach to the canvas often involved a spontaneous, intuitive process. He allowed the paint to dictate the direction of the work, resulting in a balance between controlled design and raw, expressive energy. The inclusion of small, key-like motifs and circular patterns adds a layer of mystery to the piece, hinting at a personal iconography that remains elusive. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise disparate visual languages into a cohesive, albeit complex, whole. It is a representative example of his later period, where the focus shifted towards a more deliberate arrangement of space and form, while maintaining the emotional intensity characteristic of his earlier output.
