A delicate woodblock print by Kuwagata Keisai featuring two society finches perched on a maple branch, rendered in the traditional kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Kuwagata Keisai depicts two society finches, known in Japanese as Jūshimatsu, perched upon a slender maple branch. Keisai, a pupil of Kitao Shigemasa, was known for his mastery of the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. His approach here is one of restraint and observation, favouring a clean composition that allows the subjects to occupy the negative space of the paper effectively.
The birds are rendered with precise, delicate lines, capturing their posture and plumage without unnecessary ornamentation. The maple leaves, tinged with the muted colours of autumn, provide a subtle frame for the finches. Below, the inclusion of grasses adds a sense of natural environment, grounding the composition. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the Edo-period woodblock carvers and printers, who managed to convey texture and soft colour gradients through the application of pigment onto paper.
Kuwagata Keisai was also a significant figure in the development of simplified drawing manuals, and this print reflects his interest in clarity and form. The work avoids the dramatic flair often associated with later ukiyo-e prints, opting instead for a quiet, contemplative aesthetic. The muted palette, dominated by soft browns, ochres, and faint greens, aligns with the traditional sensibilities of the period. This piece serves as an example of the refined nature of Japanese printmaking, where the balance between the subject and the surrounding space is carefully considered. The print remains a clear representation of the artist's ability to synthesise natural observation with the stylistic conventions of his time.
