A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsen, capturing the dramatic presence of kabuki actor Ōtani Hiroji III in a traditional theatrical pose.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsen depicts the kabuki actor Ōtani Hiroji III in a characteristic pose. Shunsen, a student of the Katsukawa school, produced works that captured the theatrical energy of the Edo period. The actor is shown with a dramatic expression, his posture suggesting a moment of tension or a specific narrative beat from a play. His costume features a black outer garment adorned with a repeating pattern, layered over striped robes that add visual texture to the composition.
The background is minimal, featuring a bamboo structure and a floral element to the left, which provides context without distracting from the figure. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the actor's facial features with clarity. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted tones that have aged with the paper over time, typical of prints from this era.
Katsukawa Shunsen was active during a period when actor prints, or yakusha-e, were highly popular among the urban population of Edo. These prints functioned as both advertisements for theatrical performances and as collectibles for fans of specific actors. The artist's attention to the specific physical traits of the performer, known as nigao-e, allows for the identification of the subject. This print provides a glimpse into the aesthetic conventions of early nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the focus remained on the stylised representation of human emotion and theatrical costume.
