A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsho, capturing the actor Ichikawa Yaozo II in a traditional kabuki pose.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsho depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozo II in a characteristic pose. Shunsho is recognised for his contribution to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on portraits of actors from the kabuki theatre. Unlike the stylised and often exaggerated features found in earlier prints, Shunsho introduced a greater degree of realism to his characterisations. This approach allowed audiences to identify specific performers by their facial features rather than relying solely on family crests or costume details.
The composition is balanced, with the actor positioned against a neutral background that draws attention to the posture and the garments. The figure is captured in a moment of dramatic tension, a common feature in prints intended to promote popular actors of the Edo period. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the kimono and the contours of the actor's face with clarity. The colour palette is restrained, utilising muted tones that allow the subtle patterns on the fabric to remain visible without overwhelming the overall design.
Shunsho founded the Katsukawa school, which influenced many later artists, including Hokusai. His work captures the ephemeral nature of the floating world, documenting the fashion and theatrical culture of eighteenth-century Japan. This print serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the time, demonstrating the technical skill required to produce multi-coloured woodblock prints. The attention to detail in the textile patterns and the expressive quality of the actor's gaze are typical of the high standards maintained by the Katsukawa school during this period. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of popular entertainment and visual art in historical Japan.
