A watercolour study by Theo van Hoytema, 'Kangoeroes' depicts three kangaroos with varying degrees of definition, rendered in muted shades of brown and grey.
Theo van Hoytema, a Dutch artist born in 1863, is best known for his lithographs and designs, often featuring birds and other animals. His work displays influences from the Art Nouveau movement, characterised by its use of flowing lines and naturalistic forms. Van Hoytema's career was marked by periods of both success and personal struggle, and he died in 1917. 'Kangoeroes' is a watercolour study showing three kangaroos in varying degrees of definition. The primary kangaroo is rendered with more detail, while the other two appear as ghostly, less defined versions of the same animal. The colour palette is restrained, using shades of brown and grey to create a sense of depth and movement. The composition is simple, with the kangaroos arranged across the horizontal plane of the paper. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner.
