A serene depiction of the Bodhisattva Kannon resting on a lotus petal, rendered in the traditional style of the Japanese Edo period.
This work depicts the Bodhisattva Kannon, a figure of compassion in Buddhist tradition, resting upon a singular, oversized lotus petal that functions as a vessel upon the water. The artist, Shōzan Gen’yō, employs a delicate brush technique to define the flowing robes of the deity, which drape naturally over the curved form of the petal. A large, circular halo sits behind the figure, providing a sense of luminosity and spiritual presence against the muted background of the silk support.
The composition is balanced by columns of calligraphy and red seals, which are integrated into the overall design. These inscriptions provide context, linking the visual representation to the literary and religious traditions of the period. The use of colour is restrained, focusing on the soft pink of the lotus petal and the subtle tones of the figure's attire, which contrast with the ink-washed water below. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where religious iconography was often rendered with a focus on grace and meditative stillness.
Shōzan Gen’yō was a monk-painter, and his approach to this subject demonstrates a familiarity with both the technical demands of silk painting and the theological nuances of his subject matter. The figure of Kannon is rendered with a serene expression, typical of the iconography associated with the deity's role as a saviour who traverses the sea of suffering. The surrounding silk mounting, featuring a woven pattern, frames the central image, maintaining the traditional presentation of a hanging scroll. This print captures the fine details of the original silk texture and the subtle gradations of the ink, offering a clear view of the artist's line work and the balanced arrangement of the composition.
