A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, depicting a snowy street scene in the Kasumigaseki district of Edo.
This woodblock print, titled Kasumigaseki in Snow, originates from the series Thirty-Six Views of Yedo, published in 1862. Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student and successor to the famous Utagawa Hiroshige, captures a quiet winter scene in the Kasumigaseki district of Edo, modern-day Tokyo. The composition employs a high vantage point, looking down upon a street lined with stone walls and traditional architecture, all blanketed in a fresh layer of snow.
The print features several figures navigating the cold, their presence indicated by umbrellas and winter attire. The falling snow is rendered with delicate white flecks against a darkening sky, creating a sense of stillness. Stylised, cloud-like forms in shades of pink and yellow occupy the right side of the frame, a common convention in Ukiyo-e prints to balance the composition and provide decorative interest. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on the contrast between the cool tones of the snow-covered ground and the warmer hues of the figures and the decorative clouds.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the woodblock medium, with clean lines defining the architectural elements and the silhouettes of the pedestrians. The series itself was intended to update the imagery of the capital, reflecting the changing urban environment during the final years of the Edo period. By focusing on a specific location under a particular weather condition, the artist provides a snapshot of daily life in the city. This print is a representative example of the late Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus shifted towards atmospheric effects and the depiction of specific, recognisable locations within the city of Edo.
