A detailed etching by Charles Verlat depicting a tense encounter between a cat and a mouse in a dimly lit interior.
Charles Verlat, a Belgian painter and etcher, gained recognition for his technical precision in depicting animals. This etching, titled Kat en muis, captures a domestic scene with a focus on the predatory instinct of a cat. The composition is divided by a vertical wooden structure, creating a sense of enclosure. On the left, a tabby cat crouches in a low, tense posture, its eyes fixed on a target. The shadow cast by the cat suggests a dim, interior environment, perhaps a barn or a cellar.
To the right, a broom leans against the wall, providing a visual barrier between the hunter and the prey. A small mouse is visible near the base of the broom, barely discernible in the gloom. Verlat uses the etching medium to create varied textures, from the soft fur of the cat to the rough grain of the wooden boards. The cross-hatching and line work build a sense of volume and atmosphere, typical of the nineteenth-century approach to printmaking.
Verlat was a professor at the Antwerp Academy and influenced many artists of his generation. His work often moved away from the idealised subjects of the period, choosing instead to observe the behaviour of animals in mundane settings. This print demonstrates his ability to imbue a simple narrative with tension and realism. The lack of excessive detail allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two animals, creating a quiet yet compelling study of movement and anticipation. The print is a fine example of the Animalier tradition, where the study of animal anatomy and behaviour was treated with the same seriousness as portraiture or history painting.
