A satirical mezzotint by Jacob Gole depicting a humorous, chaotic musical performance involving a cat and human figures.
Jacob Gole, a Dutch engraver and publisher active in Amsterdam, produced this mezzotint titled Kattenconcert, or Cat Concert. The work depicts a satirical scene common in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, where animals were anthropomorphised to mock human behaviour or musical performance. In this composition, a central figure holds a cat, using its tail or limbs to mimic the action of playing a stringed instrument. To the right, a woman appears to sing or wail in accompaniment, her hand pressed to her cheek in a gesture of dramatic expression. A child watches from the background, pointing towards the central action.
The mezzotint technique allows for a range of tonal values, creating soft transitions between light and shadow. Gole uses this to define the figures against a dark, indistinct background, focusing the viewer on the absurdity of the scene. The expressions on the faces of the human figures, combined with the startled or distressed look of the cat, contribute to the humorous intent of the print. Such works were popular in the Dutch Republic, where genre scenes often blended moral instruction with lighthearted social commentary. The presence of drinking vessels on the table suggests a tavern setting, a frequent location for such chaotic musical displays in contemporary art. This print provides insight into the visual culture of the period, demonstrating how artists utilised printmaking to disseminate satirical narratives to a wider audience. The composition remains a curious example of the intersection between animal imagery and social satire in European print history.
