Description
Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire records a history of siege and royal hospitality, its red stone ruins framed by green banks, mature trees and the sunlit approach through a low gateway.
Kenilworth Castle retains a Norman keep from the 1120s and endured a prolonged siege in 1266. Robert Dudley later transformed the Warwickshire fortress into an ambitious residence, creating lavish surroundings for Elizabeth I, whose celebrated visit took place in 1575.
A pale approach leads between two squat rounded wall remnants towards tall red ruins. Empty windows and broken upper walls expose the buildings' height, while trees partly conceal the lower stonework. A long buttressed wall stretches across the left side above a grassy hollow. Warm sunlight picks out the sandstone against a deep blue sky, and the full green canopy suggests summer around the historic enclosure.
