A masterful watercolour by Winslow Homer, capturing the bright light and maritime activity of the Florida coast in 1903.
Winslow Homer produced this watercolour during his later years, a period when he frequently travelled to the Caribbean and Florida to escape the harsh winters of Maine. The work captures the bright, clear light of the Florida Keys, rendered with the fluid economy that defined his mature style. Homer utilised the white of the paper to suggest the sun-bleached hulls of the vessels, while applying washes of blue and grey to define the water and the heavy, humid sky.
The composition focuses on the interaction between the boats and the surrounding harbour. The vessel named 'Lizzie' serves as the primary subject, with figures engaged in the routine tasks of maritime life. Homer avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to capture the essential motion of the rigging and the weight of the boats in the water. His brushwork remains direct, allowing the transparency of the medium to convey the atmosphere of the tropical coast.
This piece reflects Homer's interest in the daily lives of those who worked on the sea. By the early twentieth century, he had moved away from the narrative focus of his earlier illustrations, choosing instead to observe the physical realities of his environment. The result is a study of light, form, and the specific character of the Florida coast. The work remains a clear example of his technical mastery, demonstrating how he could balance precise observation with a spontaneous, painterly approach to his subjects.
