A serene depiction of the legendary Kiku Jido, rendered in Hishida Shunso's signature atmospheric morotai style.
Hishida Shunso, a primary figure in the development of modern Japanese painting, created this work during a period of experimentation with the Nihonga style. The subject, Kiku Jido, is a figure from traditional folklore, often depicted as a youth who attained immortality by drinking dew from chrysanthemum petals. Shunso approaches the narrative with a focus on atmosphere and mood rather than rigid line work.
The composition is defined by the technique known as morotai, or the blurred style. Shunso eschews the traditional dark outlines common in earlier Japanese art, opting instead for soft gradations of colour and tone to define form. The figure of the boy is small, almost swallowed by the vast, hazy environment. This choice creates a sense of isolation and timelessness, aligning with the mythical nature of the subject. The palette is muted, relying on earthy browns, ochres, and soft greys to suggest a misty, ethereal space.
Shunso was a student of Okakura Tenshin and a member of the Nihon Bijutsuin. His work reflects the tension between traditional Japanese aesthetics and the influence of Western painting techniques, particularly regarding light and shadow. By removing the hard edges of the figures, he allows the viewer to perceive the scene as a unified whole, where the human element is integrated into the natural environment. This print captures the delicate balance of the original silk painting, preserving the subtle transitions of tone that define Shunso's contribution to the Meiji period art scene. The work invites quiet contemplation, offering a glimpse into the intersection of classical legend and modern artistic sensibility.
