A poignant 1889 lithograph by Dutch artist Johan Braakensiek, capturing a child at a table with a social commentary on nutrition and daily life.
This lithograph by Dutch artist Johan Braakensiek, titled Kindervoeding (Child Nutrition), captures a domestic scene with a focus on social conditions in the late nineteenth century. Published in the weekly magazine Amsterdammer on 5 January 1889, the work depicts a young child seated at a table, holding a spoon and gesturing away from a plate. The title, which translates to 'Child Nutrition' and includes the child's declaration 'Thanks, I have had enough!', provides a narrative context for the image.
Braakensiek was a prolific illustrator and painter, known for his contributions to political and social commentary in the Dutch press. His technique here employs fine cross-hatching and tonal shading to create a sense of volume and texture, particularly in the child's clothing and the wooden chair. The composition is straightforward, placing the subject centrally to ensure the viewer engages directly with the child's expression and posture.
As a piece of social reportage, the work reflects the concerns of the era regarding poverty and the welfare of children. The artist avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a direct, observational approach that documents the reality of daily life for many families during this period. The muted, monochromatic palette is characteristic of the lithographic printing processes used in periodical publishing at the time. The inclusion of the original caption and publication details at the bottom of the print preserves its historical function as an editorial illustration. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Netherlands in the late 1880s, documenting both the artistic style of the period and the social themes that occupied the public consciousness.
