A traditional Chinese depiction of the fourth King of Hell, Wuguan Wang, presiding over the judgement of souls in the underworld.
This work depicts the fourth of the Ten Kings of Hell, known as Wuguan Wang. The composition follows the traditional iconography of Buddhist underworld narratives, which were common in Chinese religious art during the Song and Yuan dynasties. The central figure, the King, sits behind a desk, presiding over the judgement of souls. He wears formal robes and a crown, projecting an air of authority. His expression is stern, reflecting his role as a judge of the deceased.
Below the desk, the scene shifts to the torments of the underworld. Figures are shown suffering in a pool of fire, overseen by demonic attendants. These attendants, depicted with exaggerated features and dynamic postures, carry out the punishments decreed by the King. The contrast between the static, seated figure of the King and the active, chaotic movements of the figures below creates a clear hierarchy within the frame.
The painting uses a muted palette, typical of silk works from this period. The colours have faded over the centuries, leaving a soft, earthy tone that defines the background and the garments of the figures. The lines are precise, used to delineate the folds of the robes, the facial features of the King, and the flames surrounding the condemned. The work is part of a larger series of paintings representing the Ten Kings, which were used in funerary rites to guide the souls of the departed through the afterlife. The attention to detail in the clothing and the specific attributes of the King suggests a high level of craftsmanship, likely commissioned for a temple or a wealthy family for use in memorial services. The composition is balanced, with the King positioned at the top centre, anchoring the narrative of judgement and retribution.
