A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting King Solomon at his desk, surrounded by symbols of wisdom and classical architecture.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts King Solomon in the act of composing the Book of Proverbs. The artist employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. Solomon sits at a draped table, his posture leaning forward as he focuses on the manuscript before him. He wears a crown and elaborate robes, which are rendered with careful attention to the folds and decorative patterns of the fabric.
The composition is structured within an architectural setting, featuring classical columns and a heavy curtain behind the throne. De Bruyn includes symbolic tools of measurement, such as a compass and a set square, placed on the floor in the foreground. These elements suggest the wisdom and order associated with the biblical monarch. The lighting is even, allowing the viewer to observe the fine cross-hatching used to create depth and shadow across the scene.
As a printmaker active in Antwerp and Cologne, de Bruyn produced numerous works that circulated widely across Europe. His style reflects the influence of contemporary Mannerist trends, particularly in the elongated proportions and the decorative treatment of the interior space. The work serves as a clear example of the didactic function of religious prints during this period, where biblical narratives were visualised to accompany theological texts. The inclusion of the Latin inscription 'Liber Proverbiorum cap. 1' at the base confirms the specific subject matter, grounding the image in its scriptural source. This print offers a view into the technical standards of the period, where the engraver's burin was used to achieve a high degree of detail in both the human figure and the surrounding environment.
