A detailed Baroque etching depicting the meeting between King Totila and Saint Benedict, rendered with precise line work and classical architectural framing.
This etching by Jacopo Maria Giovannini depicts the historical encounter between the Ostrogothic King Totila and Saint Benedict of Nursia. The composition follows the conventions of late Baroque printmaking, utilising a clear architectural framework to organise the narrative. On the left, Saint Benedict stands before a classical portico, his posture calm and authoritative. Opposite him, the kneeling King Totila bows in a gesture of deference, surrounded by his retinue of soldiers and horses. The scene captures the tension between temporal power and spiritual authority, a common theme in religious art of the period.
Giovannini employs precise line work to define the textures of the soldiers' armour, the folds of the monastic robes, and the classical columns that frame the background. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and volume, guiding the eye across the busy scene toward the central interaction. The inclusion of a rearing horse in the foreground adds a sense of movement, contrasting with the stillness of the saint. The architectural elements, with their clean lines and balanced proportions, reflect the influence of the Bolognese school, where Giovannini was active. This print demonstrates the technical skill required to translate complex narrative scenes into monochrome media, relying on tonal variation rather than colour to convey the weight and atmosphere of the event. The work is a fine example of the reproductive print tradition, where artists sought to disseminate historical and religious subjects to a wider audience through the medium of etching.
