A woodblock print by Ohara Koson, depicting a kingfisher perched on a tree stump, rendered in delicate lines and subtle colours. This work exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the beauty of the natural world.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-Hanga movement. He is known for his depictions of birds and flowers (kachō-e), a popular genre in Japanese art. Koson initially trained in traditional painting styles before turning to woodblock printing, where he achieved considerable success both in Japan and abroad. His work often features a close observation of nature, rendered with delicate lines and subtle colours. He also used the names Ohara Hōson and Shōson. This print depicts a kingfisher perched on a tree stump, its gaze fixed on the water below. The bird's plumage is rendered in shades of blue, green, and orange, contrasting with the muted tones of the surrounding environment. Lily pads float on the water's surface, and a willow branch hangs overhead, adding to the tranquil atmosphere. The composition is carefully balanced, with the bird positioned slightly off-centre to create a sense of movement and anticipation. The print exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the beauty and detail of the natural world.
